In the fall, DLNP JINR scientists returned to the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (Italy) to continue the installation of enriched Ge-76 detectors in the LEGEND experiment. The preparatory work necessary for a full-scale launch of the experiment was carried out. This was followed by reassembly of the liquid argon instrumentation and all currently available detectors made from Ge-76. All operations were performed with the direct participation of our specialists.

Scientists from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR, Dubna), along with specialists from the Limnological Institute of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (LI SB RAS, Irkutsk) and from the University of Bucharest (Romania), have examined elemental composition of Baikal sponges collected in areas with different anthropogenic load. It turned out that sponges can be successfully used as bioindicators of toxic element pollution in Lake Baikal. The results were published in the journal Marine Pollution Bulletin.

Despite objective difficulties, DLNP JINR scientists took a decisive part in the installation of the first 60 kg of detectors of enriched Ge-76 in the LEGEND setup located at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (Italy). In addition to the direct assembling of detector strings, our specialists fabricated high-purity nylon mini-shrouds used to reduce the radioactive background of the experiment and for the first time performed the installation of the complete liquid argon instrumentation, developed and created by a joint team of scientists from JINR and the Technical University of Munich.

The Neutrino Telescope at Lake Baikal has detected a signal from a radio blazar flare


On 8 December 2021, scientists from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole announced the observation of a track, a candidate for the astrophysical neutrino with an estimated energy of about 172 TeV. One of the brightest radio blazars in the sky, PKS 0735+17, is located in the region where the neutrino was presumably born (considering the direction of the incoming particle). The event stands out since this is the most powerful radio blazar flare in the gamma and visible ranges in the entire history of observations of this blazer. Also, its X-ray brightness increased, and the radio burst started. The coincidence between neutrino detection time and such a powerful blazar flare is the second one in the entire history of IceCube observations.
